There are 86 billion neurons in our brains. Neurons send and receive information. Although neurons come in many different types, they generally have three parts: a dendrite that receives a signal, a cell body called a soma that computes the signal, and an axon that sends a signal out.


              

                 

About Neuralink.

Neuralink is a company that was founded in 2016 and started working in 2017. It was founded by Mr. Elon Musk. The company aims to solve important spine and brain problems with seamlessly implanted devices.

According to Neuralink your brain cell are a kind of electrical wiring where the neurons sending the signals. And those signals could be sent and received by a chip. They have introduced a Brain-computer interface it’s called a Link. From which they can cure everything from paralysis to blindness.

They have also introduced a surgical robot that will be helped to directly implant this chip. The threads on the Link are so fine and flexible that they can’t be inserted by the human hand. Instead, they have to build a robotic system that the neurosurgeon can use to reliably and efficiently insert these threads exactly where they need to be.


 

They say that they will remove a coin-sized part of your skull and insert the link. There will just be a scar and if your have hair that won’t be even visible. They have also stated that the electrode won’t damage their brain. 

 

The neuralink architecture device has been simplified. The earlier device was having multiple parts in it including a piece that was to be fitted behind the ear. It was very complex states Elon musk. 


 

Live Demo 

Elon musk did a live demo on three pigs. In which there was one without any implant, one had it implanted and then removed and the last one named Gertrude with 2 months on the implant. 


 

We were able to see the live reading of neurons in the pig's brain firing in real-time specifically the neurons that were sending and receiving the messages from her snout. Whenever it’s snout touches something a beep sound was used to produce. 

We also saw the chip identifying the movement of the pig based on his brain activity. And also saw the electrodes firing neurons and lighting up the brain.

 

 

Other Specification

Neuralink was removable. If you want to remove the link in the future or you want an upgrade of the product it was a simple and secured process without any damage. It was demonstrated on the pig. 

 

Expectations

There were also talks about curing blindness by implanting the link in the visual cortex, treating mental health conditions like depression, anxiety, and addiction. They also told me that implantation would take a very short time like getting it implanted in an hour then leaving the hospital on the same day.
